I have received a message from Peter Mitton about a new project that he thought TSF members would be interested in:
Some of your members may be interested in the outcome of some work I’ve been doing to re-typeset William Chappell’s Popular Music of Olden Times. I’ve got Volume 1 to a state where it is ‘shareable’ with any interested parties. The PDF is available at: https://github.com/petemitton/chappell, as well as more details about the approach I’ve taken. (It still needs at least another round of copy editing of the text and music before I’m going to consider it ‘finished’). I’d appreciate any feedback from anyone who takes an early look at the material. The Github page includes instructions on how to do this.
The PDF text is searchable and there is an abc file of all the musical examples (that could doubtless be improved) in the ‘music’ subdirectory. Brave souls could even take the LaTex source files and adapt the content to their own needs. They’d need to change a few things though as the current version depends on the fonts available on my desktop computer.
